What are your dates? Skyscanner is showing great prices for March 2020. Even direct is looking good.

Norwegian are £675 each. For £3500 total.

If you flew a day earlier then BA direct is £3200. Or BA into Tampa on the Saturday isn’t too bad. £3360 including checked baggage.

If you will consider indirect.
United via Dulles is very cheap. But a longish wait until Dulles.
All 4 flights for under £2000

If you can leave from
Heathrow and return to Gatwick. Then virgin have indirect put and direct back for £768. I’d do this as on the way there I don’t mind the indirect but on the way home I just want to get home. That works out at £2900. That doesn’t include cases.

I think I’d opt for BA direct into Tampa. It’s a short drive from Tampa and the price isn’t far off what you had planned on paying

Looking at Skyscanner, you can get direct flights on your dates from Gatwick from £875 each - so £3500 in total.

Or you can fly indirect with one stop on the way out and direct on the way back from £630 each - so £2520 in total. The outward indirect flight would add about 5 hours onto your journey, not an extra day.

Admittedly, I suspect those prices are without checked luggage.

You don’t really loose a day going indirect, looking at the flight time you can certainly get flights in shortly after the later virgin/BA ones, so not a loss of a lot of time at all - and you clear immigration at the first airport, so rather then a potential 45 min wait for immigration you hope off straight through to 2nd bag check!
