Help disaster may have struck

I took my Canon 400D on holiday and got some wonderful shots but disaster struck. Somehow my camera got dropped or knocked onto the marble floor of the apartment and the LCD screen is shattered on the inside. The camera seems to be working fine apart from that, as I carried on taking photos regardless as the only other option was definitley to have no photos. Any idea on cost timescales to fix? I am off to Boston in two weeks and then California the next month so I'm not sure whether to try and get it fixed or to pick up a new body in Boston.

Help needed please

sorry to hear about your camera - I have googled and this is all I have found - which is send it back to Canon - they should be able to quote you. Accidental damage cover on house insurance?

Ring your house insurance. My DD pulled my camera onto the hard floor a few years ago, and cracked the case. Camera did still work but only with tape on the battery compartment which isn't ideal. I never really thought about calling the insurance but a few people suggested it, and so i gave them a ring and they sent me a new camera out in the post a few days later.

I would go down the insurance and replace route to be honest. I know someone who had the screen on a 30D replaced at a ridiculous price of £185.00 + vat and it took 4 weeks from Canon ! the strange thing is seemingly that bits are a rarity for the cameras, as they make enough components to make 1 full camera and not just churn them out !

So to be honest it will be quicker and less painful to just use your house insurance.

Thanks everyone, I tried my insurance company but they can't speak to me until DH is home as the policy is in his name. Was going to try teh holiday insurance but I don't think the individual item level is high enough.

I think I will definitely buy a new body if I can claim as there may still be other damage I am unaware of.
