Lens Help needed
I have a dilemma and I need your help. I bought a Canon 400D with the kit lens (18-55) and a Tamron 55-200 lens. Really pleased with the results I get, but am fed up having to keep changing the lens. I know that this is going to be more of an issue in Florida.
What I reckon I need is a lens to cover the whole range (18-200 (plus?)) so that I can leave it fixed to the camera. But then again I don't want it to be too large so that it won't fit into a small camera bag. Of course, price will also be an issue as DW does not want me spending even more cash! All advice will be appreciated. Thanks J

Ive recently bought a Nikon with a 18-200. its fantastic for travel. Also if you can run to it get a lens with some form of stabilisation - it realy makes a diference in low light and at the long end of the Zoom.
I just checked its about 2cm longer than my old 18-70 - I bought a bigger case! the Sigma version looks even smaller. |

Canon themselves dont make anything that covers this range, although Sigma and Tamron do.
These wide ranging lenses however, never get very good reviews or feedback - they tend to lack clarity and are prone to barrel distortion at the wide end and fuzziness at the long end. You'll pay around £250 for either the Tamron or the Sigma - cheaper from HK dealers or ebay. Ive been tempted a few times but never been that blown away with the results Ive seen from them to be honest, so never taken the plunge. The Nikon 18-200VR is a lovely lens and is probably the one thing that would make me turn to the "darkside" LOL as Canon dont do anything similar. To be honest, apart from when I go to Animal Kingdom or Sea World to shoot the wildlife, my 17-85Is stays on my camera the whole time. I never find the need to pop on my 70-300 round the parks, so I think you'll do OK with the 18-55 for general day to day park use. Take the 55-200 when you go to the "animal" parks and you'll be fine! |

I have to say that I am surprised at how well the Sigma 18-200mm OS performs. I started off not expecting to like it much, but am finding it to work very well for me. But I would recommend buying it from somewhere like Jessops that has a good returns policy, for they are reputed to have qality control issues...

I brought a sigma lens for my digital canon eos.
Was worried when first brought it but it handles brilliant. And the cost was a lot cheaper than canon. |

I've got a Tamron 18-200 on my canon, it makes a great all purpose lens, however at the longer end of the rage it is a very slow lens f6.3 so really does require very good light, or steadying with the use of a tripod or something similar. The results I've had from it have been very good.
