I have been a long time canon DSLR user and at present I have two Canon bodies and a selection of lenses, I agree that the digital compacts have come along way in recent years and I have bought a Panasonic lumix TZ3 for my wife that we take out with us when I don’t want to carry the DSLR but I don’t think I could ever go back to all compacts
I see you live in Manchester well I am a regular visitor to the airport and often give the canon cameras a day out along the Bolin way |

My DH has a Nikon D40 which he loves but also has a Panasonic lumix which is handy when you don't want to carry the big camera around with you

I have the Canon EOS 450D and love it, also have a Panasonic Lumix which is great as well (very good zoom). dSLR can be heavy and when in Florida, make yr neck v. sweaty! found the panasonic was great, small portable and fitted in a pocket
