Thank you all for your words of encouragement. The points to get into nursing/midwifery here in Ireland are very high and we were looking at UK universities but apparently because of Brexit the course fees for international students are £20,000 per year even though dd was born in London and spent her first 7 years there. Anyway lots to think about, thank you all for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it.

What college is your dd looking at doing, some of the IT's are lower points, midwifery seems to be higher. My dd also thought about midwifery, but if you do midwifery as your primary degree you are unable to do general as an add on, however if you do general as your primary degree you can do midwifery as a post graduate in 18 months. My dd is qualified just a year and is looking a doing her midwifery post grad next year.

The are also some good PLC courses that can be used as an entry route to nursing and bring ip your points.

20,000 per year! Wow! I’m surprised they recruit anyone on to their courses at that cost.😳

My main advice would be for your daughter to have a look around and be clear if she wants to do nursing or midwifery. They are VERY different careers. The uni’s look at applicants very differently. It is easier to get into Nursing than midwifery and the course is more intense.
The advice many years ago was to do nursing, get experience then do the conversion to midwifery. It is different now. It is very difficult, in some places impossible, to do the 18 month conversion. In my area of the country I work with maybe 3
Who have done it in the last 10 years.
I work with several that had to start over and do the 3 year midwifery course after nursing as there are no places for conversion.

I know the current climate is difficult but I would encourage her to get work experience where she can

I am happy for you to message me for any more info. I am a direct entry midwife and I have many friends who have also down nursing before midwifery.
