York. Can anyone offer some advice?
Considering a last minute visit to York, purely for University reasons for DD ( long story short, she wants to visit incase she changes her mind on results day )
We live in Kent, so its quite a trek. Trying to decide if the car or train is best. I understand we cannot visit the actually UNI but just want to walk the town, get a feel for the place etc, maybe see the UNI Buildings/areas. So, I need help deciding : If York is a drivable city or would I be better catching a train and walking to the UNI? Probably going to have a night stopover whichever method we use, so also recommendations on good areas to stay would be very helpful too. Many Thanks

I’d get the train. It’s right on the Eastcoast mainline and your daughter will be most likely using the train to / from uni so good to see how the journey is.
Parking in York is limited unless you book a hotel with a space it can be a challenge. Generally it’s a very walkable city. |

Whenever we go to York for day we follow the park and ride signs and park outside and then get the buses they have from there. When we stop over we go by train cos parking is an issue we've found, we usually stay at Premier Inn blossom Tree South think it's called, there's two premier inns on the same road north and south, only stuck with south cos it was fine first time we stayed so just kept going to that one. Its only a short walk from there into town centre and if you happen to go by train it's only a few minutes walk from train station too.

Depending on the cost of the train that is easiest. Otherwise drive and use one of the park and ride bus services to get into the city for the day.
Driving will give more flexibility and choice of hotels. |

Thanks, Ill price up the trains now. We don't mind walking, so sounds like the best option.

Agree that the train would be the best bet.
The premier Inn(s) on Blossom Street are the opposite side of York to the University (guessing you are looking at York Uni rather than York and St John?). York Uni campus is walkable from town or you can get the bus (Number 66 from the railway station- Hesslington). It is really easy to walk around York, very compact with most of the centre still being inside the walls.

If you do drive and get a hotel on the outskirts (often much cheaper) parking isn't too bad at the moment- many of the centre car parks are doing 2 hours free parking until the end of July if you download the parking app. I drove in the other day and was really lazy (I have free parking at work which is about a 10 minute walk but wanted to nip in and out) and parked in Picadilly which is slap bag in the centre of York and it was half empty- unheard of usually.

It’s very easy to drive to- straight up the M1. Just before Leeds continue on what we call the M1 link road. You can park in the centre in these quiet times no issue, or park in the park and ride at Tesco. You can’t miss it.
You will love York, it is a lovely city.
