Groupon holiday deals
Has anyone used Groupon for short breaks? I have never bought anything via Groupon but I have just spent the evening browsing their website. They seem to offer great deals on some UK hotel breaks, and even some short holidays abroad including flights. Are they too good to be true? What’s the catch? I notice that the flight times aren’t mentioned, so are they usually night flights, are there expensive added charges for luggage etc? Or am I being too sceptical and they are actually as good as they sound? 😀
Our DD will be going to university in September so a few short breaks for DH and I sounds very tempting at these prices |

We booked a two night break in the UK through Groupon, when we got there it had shut down! Fortunately we were only just over an hour away from home. An older couple turned up who had been bought the break as a golden wedding present, unfortunately they had driven three hours to get there.

Oh no, that’s terrible. Did you get a refund?
This was the sort of thing I was worried about, it seems too good to be true. |

I have to say I've fallen out of Groupon big time over the last couple of years and don't use it anymore. Sick of getting the 'Groupon treatment' or being bound by extensive T&Cs and find even at cut price it doesn't tend to be worth it.
I've not used them for a break, but I know my sister did for several hotels travelling around on a UK roadtrip a few years ago. She told me they were driving to one hotel and got a call to say their booking had been cancelled as it was overbooked so had to find somewhere else, and when they turned up at another hotel it had changed hands and they had no idea she had a booking! A girl at my work did book a trip to Greece using Secret Escapes or Voyage Prive, one of those sites that specialises in travel and I think it went ok. |

Secret escapes have worked well for me. Good deals on hotels only and for the packages they sell with flights already included, for UK, and europe.
My experience of the hotels / tours where it sells you just the room and then says flights available has been less successful I think. The flight prices come out higher doing it this way than I would have expected, making the overall thing less of a deal. I have ended up booking my own flights or looked at bA which often has some good European deals on Edited at 12:35 AM. |
