In accommodation news. York e mailed students with an offer today telling them they could apply for accommodation today. DD missed it as I it went into her Junk e mail. However. Somewhere a mother has been checking the website every day and saved her 😉

My daughter is with a flat mate who went into clearing for Lincoln and still got into the most popular accommodation.
There will be people who put their choices down next week that will defer their place, decide not to go or go to a different university. Lincoln had real problems last year with one of their brand new accommodation blocks. It was not finished (and is still not as the company went bust). The university was contacting all students who had put certain choices to ask if they would consider going to a different accommodation and offering them a monetary incentive, so that they could accommodate those with nowhere to live! My daughter stuck with her choices and still got her first choice. So there is another tip, not always a good idea to choose a brand new accommodation! |

Gawd, this is sounding like the panic when booking fastpasses or getting a boarding pass for RotR! It's like you have to be on-the-ball and ready for the exact day when the accommodation applications open.

Dd is going to Lincoln but BGU. Accomodation opened at the end of January. She looked last night but you have to put a minimum of 5 preferences. Allocated on a first come first served basis but all the choices are there.

Wow well done! DD hasn't even decided which Uni yet. A case of the dreaded I don't know which one to firm or insurance that has been ongoing for weeks

I don’t think so. Some Uni’s do not have sufficient accommodation for their Undergraduates. Reasonably significant issue for a young person leaving home for the first time. Many use a get the money as fast a possible system meaning a none level playing field for applications, at best reducing choice. Given the range of quality of accommodation at some Uni’s a reasonably important issue for some young people. If you’re telling yourself it will make no difference then to be honest. Your wrong. Luck may or may not be on your side with that approach.

I agree, there can be many issues with suitable accommodation at universities.
All 3 of our children have been to uni. The first one went to Southampton, which was his first choice and he applied for accommodation early. He ended up in a condemned building (due to asbestos) owned by the uni. They had to reopen it as there was a huge shortage of accommodation. Son 2 had no problems for his uni. DD is in her first year at Bristol as I’ve mentioned and had her first choice accommodation. Many at Bristol didn’t get their first choice, and some had to commute in from South Wales as there wasn’t sufficient availability in Bristol. This could be really distressing for a teenager moving away from home for the first time. I know in some cases it’s unavoidable, my DD knew she wanted to go to Bristol but also knew of the accommodation issues. She was prepared if she didn’t get her chosen accommodation as she felt it’s only for the first year anyway but it can be stressful Edited at 11:10 PM. |
