Everything hinges on what time Avis checked you out at the exit barrier. That will be on the contract they handed you.

So if for example you collected it at 5.10pm you need to be back by 5.09pm or will face a charge.

The rental 'day' starts at the time they check you out not the time you booked for.

A quick Google threw this up that appears to be accurate.

Vehicles are rented on a daily (24 hour) basis. There is a 29-minute grace period for returns. After 30 minutes late, hourly charges may apply. After 90 minutes late, a full-day late charge may apply.

Cant add more to MrTMs post simple really if it costs or not.
In the grand scheme of things what you paid for hols if you get a charge it's a minuscule %.
Just enjoy.
