3 Sim to use in US

To use 3 sim with feel at home in US do you have to set up an account with 3 or can you make a one off purchase from a 3 shop and add the feel at home at the time of purchase?

I am on the 3 network but didnt get the ultimate plan when i last upgraded so did not have the useage abroad. I just went into a 3 shop and bought the sim for �20 and used that in the states for 3 weeks last year. Used waze on my phone and drove about 2500 miles and still never ran out of data. Just gave the new number out to those who needed it so saved all those unwanted calls too. Will be doing the same again this year.

I have bought a 3 PAYG sim for �1. I am going to pop it into my phone the week before we go, top up with �20 and buy a �20 bundle including data. I hope I have got it right? If not I am sure someone will correct me.( I figured if I do it the week before, if I run into problems I will be able to go to the nearest 3 shop 25 miles away and have them look at it for me) Once I am sure it is set up properly I will just pop the sim back out and change back to my normal one until the day we go.
