C&L Bangkok, Elephant Hills & Phuket adventure - March 2017 - Day 2 - Bangkok day 2

Day 2 - Bangkok – Temples, the Grand Palace & Octave Rooftop Bar

We got up at 7:30 having slept much better. We went straight down to breakfast where I had the pancakes again and Chris made a bacon sandwich.

We went and got ready and left about 8:45. We had already planned to do the Grand Palace and some of the temples today (they were closed on Mondays so couldn't do them the day before). We were doing this ourselves rather than booking a guide.

We walked to the skytrain station and got it to Ratchatewi.

This is the victory monument we walked passed everyday to the skytrain.

I can't remember the price of the train journey. We then got a boat down the river, this was interesting! We had read about it in the book that we could get the boat to the grand palace rather than taxi, but it definitely looked like locals used it rather than tourists. We had trouble communicating our journey but we paid about 10 baht each and got off at the first stop. The boat journey itself was really fun though !

We worked out where we were on our map then walked towards the Grand Palace. It was so hot so we popped into a McDonald's we passed to get a coke and the air con was lovely to cool down for a bit! We continued our walk and got to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew Temple. We had to get past security to get in and they were asking for ID, luckily we both had our driving licences with us and they accepted them as we didn't carry our passports with us!

The queue to get in was huge, but it looked like it was a lot of tour guides so I asked where we needed to join and they pointed me to a shorter queue. I am not sure if we queue jumped a load of people or if it was the right one! They were very strict on dress code and everyone needed trousers, including men. We'd read about this in our guidebook so were prepared but it caught a lot of people out.

Entrance was 500 baht each (£12.50ish), we wandered round the temples and saw the Grand Palace taking photos. The temples were beautiful and we would've probably spent more time admiring them if it hadn't been so hot!

We then headed over to Wat Pho Temple (the reclining Buddha temple) this was 100 baht each to get in. We really enjoyed this and waited a while to queue for in the perfect selfie spot!

Following this we headed over to China town, it was about 2 now and we were getting very hungry. We stopped off at a restaurant and had stir friend noodles with beef, friend rice with seafood, ribs in red sauce and 2 cokes. This came to 780 baht. This was nice but not one of the nicest meals of the holiday.

We then walked to Wat Traimit Temple, which was 40 baht each to go in. We wandered round getting photos then about 3:30 decided to head back to the hotel.

We originally planned to get a taxi back but we asked one and they told us it was a long way and wouldn't take us. So we got another taxi to the nearest metro stop Hua Lamphong and got the metro to Si Lom for 19 baht each. We were really impressed with their metro and the air con! We then got the sky train the rest of the way back. We got back about 4:30.

I headed off to the gym and Chris relaxed, then we enjoyed a little snack!

We showered and got changed and headed out about 6:45. We wanted to visit a rooftop bar and thought the Octave rooftop bar looked lovely and was more convenient than some of the others.

We asked for a taxi from the hotel, we'd read they try to give you a fixed rate but they do have to use their meter. He said 200 baht so we said no and I went to get out the car then he agreed to use the meter. The taxi was 110 baht and even included a stop along the way for the driver to relieve himself !

After a slightly eventful taxi journey we made it to the bar. It was quite quiet and we were given a table right at the edge . I ordered a sunset sizzler and Chris had a beer. This came to 712 baht. We took our time with our drink, taking in the atmosphere and sights. It was surprisingly quiet but got busier about 8.

We left about 8:30 and went to the nearest sky train stop Thong Lo. We hadn't eaten so we're hungry and decided to just grab a McDonald's as we wanted something quick. We were getting picked up at 4:30am the next day and needed to get packed! This came to 319 baht for a meal each and was standard McDonald's!

We got back about 10:15, packed up our stuff and went to bed .

Walked 21km
