Hidden disability lanyard scheme

I’ve seen a few posts about this. It’s mostly people I know with children who have autism.
I was thinking of getting one for husband who has a multitude of hidden issues - deafness, diabetes, epilepsy and most important mobility issues which means he can’t stand for long periods.
Has anyone had any experience. Most people I know have flown from UK to Europe. Will it be recognised in the US?

We use one for our adult DS who has autism and learning difficulties. If you email special assistance at the airport, they will advise what help is available to your husband. In DS’s case, they had a lanyard ready for him to collect from their desk after we did twilight checkin.

It is a little bit hit and miss if it is recognised, but we were pulled to a new line in immigration at MCO by a staff member who saw DS walking through with lanyard which was a big help. Whenever staff clocked it, they were extra patient and clear in their instructions. We were very grateful and will use again. I hope your DH has a good flight x

We’ve been a few times but his health is worse now and it would take some of the stress of the trip away.

If visiting the Disney parks, also look to use their DAS pass if DH struggles to stand for long periods.

Hi there. Jumping in on this thread. With the lanyard do they just allow you more time through security etc? My 12 year old isn’t diagnosed with any conditions but get la incredible anxious at security in the airport. Last time we flew he had a little break down and cried when selected for the full body scanner. Would the lanyard make that smoother for him?

It’s hit and miss with the lanyard, we’ve had some amazing support and assistance with it and some terrible assistance where they wanted my son to walk through the scanner ahead of me without anyone on the other side even though I explained many times that he was severely autistic, non verbal and had the understanding of a 12 months old at 8 years old and would run off if they expected that and they would be in trouble if that happened as he doesn’t see danger or respond to his name or instructions. They didn’t believe me and made is stand to one side for 30 mins to ensure he was behaving as I told them he would, even thought I travel with all his disability paperwork which they refused to look at when offered. The whole thing was really upsetting for my son. However it’s definitely worth getting the lanyard as the good experiences we’ve had out way the bad.

Mco took my son who has aspergers through immigration the back way as he can’t cope very well in crowds

I used this back in May. Ironically it worked well at MCO, we were immediately placed in a queue with aircrew and not I the main queue. Not so great at LGW where it was totally dismissed on our return by ground crew
