Just realised how easy it is to be prejudiced

So watching the West Memphis Three about the murder of 3 young boys in Memphis.

10 minutes in and it was revealed one of the victims had a stepdad. My first thought was ‘it’s going to be the stepdad’. Now my best mate and best man at my wedding is a stepdad, so I was shocked that this was my first thought. At that point I’d never heard of the case and there had been no indication it may be the stepdad, the program was barely passed the opening introduction. To me it shows I’m capable of prejudice and has really made me think about some of my beliefs.

If you enjoyed watching this and haven't seen The Central Park 5 I'd recommend it.

Is this on Netflix as it sounds like something I’d enjoy.
Watched Central Park 5 and enjoyed that.

I agree with you though, I think it’s the step dad.

Sadly in most of these cases it does turn out to be a family member so perhaps not prejudice .

I think we all have these thoughts but never express them , I think it comes from history telling us that “it’s the stepdad “ or “it’s the boyfriend” as 9 times out of 10 we are proven right so now days it seems like our default setting .
Don’t think it’s you personally... I could be wrong but I think we base all our assumptions on what we have learnt from the out comes of murder cases.

Madeline Mcann is great example , everyone thought it was the parents as the story is so hard to believe , quotes like “ no Good parent would ever go out for dinner and leave their children alone “
Well if your my age (44) then you may have been from the generation where parents sat us in the pub car park for hours with a coke and some crisps while they got drunk and drove us home ... no one would believe that story these days!

I have a wonderful stepdad and he wouldn’t hurt a fly ... He’s been my stepdad for 25 years .

Why’s that prejudice? Most murders are committed by family members and partners. Sad fact but true. Therefore it could be a logical suspicion. I haven’t seen this series but if it’s like most of them they also purposely lead you down a blind alley making you think one thing and you may find out it’s not the step dad at all.
I never thought Madeleines’ parents did it as it didn’t add up at all.

We do unconscious bias training at work and it's something that I find useful to be aware of.

Often in these type of programmes they casually mention someone as a way of setting the scene for a later 'reveal '
