Sky box...

Hi. We have a movistar+ box ( we leave in Spain) but it is the same principle as a sky+ box.
Question:-

Should we leave it on standby 24/7? We used to turn the old one off but I have been told by A.N.Other that this buggers up the electronics.

As an aside. Should we leave the TV on or off as well

Thanks in advance

It makes no difference. Its fine to leave in standby 24/7. Which i assume is what you mean. If you were going away for weeks unplug them.
This reminds me a bit of my grandma who used to insist you had to put all plug power switches to off even if nothing plugged in, otherwise they could start a fire, and my mates mum in 1985 who used to cover the VHS with a sheet, so the clock wouldnt attract burglars at night.
Sorry Tinkerbell just pulling your leg.
My mum and dad used to think you had to turn the gas she water off when you went on holiday as well.

Thats okay... the issue we have is in the summer its upwards of 4o degrees and the boxes fan comes on and gets very hot! So we tend to turn it off in the summer months?

We always left everything on in U.K.

My nan wouldnt put the kettle between6-6.30pm as everyone in the street was using the power and she got less as it took longer to boil !

YEP in standby, and it felt hot to the touch.

Hopefully, this new one will be better, it is half the size and is a later model.

Sounds a bit dodgy actually it shouldnt be getting hot in standby, Im not surprised you were turning it off!

When its on standby it should have a very low amount of power, simply to maintain its boot state (so it doesnt have to boot up again from the ROM chip). It shouldnt be using enough energy that it needs to be cooling the chips and circuits (hence fan triggering), passive cooling should be enough for that and only slightly warm to touch. Even if its very warm. However If its on standby but recording programmes, then the fan may kick in- could that have been the situation?
Hopefully your new one will not do that.
