I have an iPhone 8 Plus and it has 2 lenses, so you can zoom in 2x. Is an option if you’re due an upgrade. And with 64gb storage as standard, plenty of space for pics and video! Think the 7 plus has a similar option.

We haven’t been to Florida for quite a while, but have a compact system camera. It’s like a digital slr, but the size of a large compact. You can have multiple lenses and I’m planning on utilising it when we hopefully go next year!

Also have a go pro. Got that from the GoPro eBay store, refurbed model for a fraction of the price!

My wife is a wedding photographer and when we went last year she took her Nikon D750. Honestly she only took about 10% of her pictures on this camera. The rest were taken on our Iphones.

she has said if we go again she will get a smaller camera like a Nikon 1, she loves Nikon.

I would say a go pro is amazing if you go to waterparks.

I use to take a decent compact camera and my DSLR but when my Compact packed in (around 2015) I decided that phone cameras had come on leaps and bounds and so I didn't replace it and in 2016 I took my iPhone (think I had the 6s at the time) and my DSLR and my son has a Panasonic Underwater camera so he took that too and like the person above I recon I only took 10%-15% of my photos on my DSLR and the rest were done on the iPhone and were all just as good a quality as my compact that had packed in.

I upgraded after that to the iPhone 7 and have just upgraded again and went for the 8 Plus this time, purley for the better camera and the camera is brilliant.

I think you will be fine with the iPhone camera over a compact (obviously DSLR would yeild great results but they are expensive and a bit of a pain to lug around! ) however I can't comment on the little attachment lenses. I don't expect much of anything out of them due to the price, but I suppose they are cheap enough to give them a go. I am going to get a little kit off ebay which has a mini tripod for the iphone, bluetooth remote and includes 2 of those lenses but I am mainly getting it for the tripod and remote. (obviously if doing this only do it where there are no people about or someone is likley to nab the phone and run! )

ETA : Also if you download google photos App to your phone if it does happen to get full (depending how much free memory you have) you can off load pics in to there till you get home!

It depends on what sort of quality you want. phones are good for quick snaps, but the quality on even the best phone cameras is very poor. Poor lens, small rubbish sensor etc. However this is fine for many and there is nothing wrong with this if it is what you want. great for social media.
If you want decent quality you will need a decent camera.
So as i say - it depends. There is no right or wrong answer here - just need to decide what you want.
I personally wouldn't use a phone for anything I wanted to keep, do would take a small high quality compact. For other one off holidays I take my DSLR and lenses.

I used to take a DSLR and got fed up with lugging it about and spending my holiday looking through a view finder. it's a compact and a phone for me these days. I wouldn't waste money on a zoom lens for your phone, put it towards a compact instead.

With the huge pixel counts you get now a days there is little need for zoom. Wide angle is far better and then crop what you want.

I disagree with this (obviously we are all entitled to our own opionions ). 90% of people who are not in to photography and just want a camera for holidays or special occassions do not own and would not put the money in to a DSLR - 90% of people will only ever buy a Standard Compact camera and in comparrison the decent high end phones (be it the iphone, samsung, google pixel, HTC etc but obvioulsy the new higer end models) return just the same quality as most average priced compact cameras which is all the average non serious photograph taker will purchase in order to take your standard holiday shots.

Obviously comparing shots from a DSLR to a phone camera there is no comparrison, when I compare my own DSLR to my iPhone 8 plus there is a MASSIVE difference in quality, sharpness, DOF, colour pop etc, however, if I compare the 8+ photos to my sons very decent £180 panasonic compact there is little to no difference at all, and I would go as far to say that the iphone 8+ photos are slightly better!

So IMO for your "average" holiday shot / special occasion photographer then a decent high end phone camera will hit the mark - aside from the fact, even someone holding a decent DSLR can take a ton of rubbish photos next to someone holding a phone camera... it's not all about the kit, its about the eye as well!

The question was about "what camera to use?". Not about the quality of the person taking the shots. Though I agree that the photographer can make the most difference in getting good shots.

The sensors and lenses in phones are poor quality compared even to a fairly basic cameras - much of this is down to basic physics. That is a fact - backed up as I say by physics.

I would challenge the comparison with a £180 Panny. If what you are saying is true, I would be taking the Panny back as there should be a massive difference (unless the Panny is a number of years old - but even then there should be a very noticeable difference).
