2 reasons for us.
1 - direct flights with no stops from Heathrow. We live 15-20 mins from Heathrow and it will always be our airport of choice. Heathrow to Miami is a direct flight with BA and no stops. My husband would rather the 3.5hr drive to Orlando than go on the m25 to Gatwick any day of the week! 2 - Price. It's always been cheaper for our dates to book BA to Miami as a fly drive. Both times we've paid around £2500-£2700 for 2 adults and 2 kids with a car (7 seater tahoe) and a night in Miami for when we arrive. For August it's great value. Plus with BA you can pay a £300 deposit to secure the booking.

For us it is either price is considerably cheaper or we are coming off or going on a cruise either from Fort Lauderdale or Miami. Flew back FLL- JFK-LHR in March and saved a considerable sum and as the flights were PE from Virgin on a code share flight we had TSA pre which was great as we walked past a huge queue and got through security in a couple of minutes.

We have decided to just do Miami and Cancun this year and our flights to Miami were under £400 each but then we used our Avios points and it brought the price down to less than £240 each .

We flew into Fort Lauderdale because we were wanting to base ourselves there and have two side trips to Orlando and Grand Cayman.
We chose that route as we could go from Glasgow to Philadelphia and onwards to FLL with American Airlines, though we booked it all on BA website. It was a great route but had tight but manageable transfer times
