The simple answer is, because they just do! I’ve been driving for many years and a big percentage of drivers on the road drive too close to the car in front when said car is driving at the speed limit. Usually to indicate that they feel they should speed up or to intimidate them into doing so. Doesn’t personally work on me, I’m much more likely to slow down if I have a moron sitting on my bumper. But I would like to think that SOME drivers may give a new driver with a black box a bit of slack and back off.
But what do I know! I’ve spent half of my life hugging a giant mouse!

I read of a spate of accidents deliberately bumping into P plate cars while at traffic lights etc. People trying to claim whiplash injuries and choosing unsuspecting new drivers saying they braked sharply.

No harm imo, if it makes a few people ease off the throttle then it was worth the time.
We are having major roadworks being carried out on the main motorway road I need to travel to and from work everyday. They are going take 2 yrs and the workmen are working very close to the traffic. There is a 60km/h restriction but most people ignore it. There have been signs up saying X amount of prosecutions but dosent deter people. This week they have signs of 2 children in hard hats and reflective vests saying "my dad works here". Can def see a slow down!

When I passed my test 10 years ago,I got P plates and honestly felt that it was like putting a neon sign above my car saying “take the p!*@!” to other drivers. If anything, people were less patient and courteous. I think they were looking at me to make mistakes. The minute I took them off,I was fine.

I think I must be weird but I always allow more consideration if I see a P plate .. not that im a crazy driver but I just give more room and I tend not to assume that they are going to behave how I would at junctions roundabouts etc .. most are absolutely fine but im sure we all remember how daunting it was the first few weeks of driving alone In the car for the first times.
