I believe it’s free if you get married or move house, but if you want to change it just because, then you have to pay.

It's also free when you have to change it at 70 and every three years thereafter - trust me

Thanks for all the replies at least I know I can still use it but I’m now thinking I will go plastic. All the years I’ve being I have only ever carried a copy of passport which would get me in trouble if stopped and I don’t like carrying the real one with me.

We still have the original paper copy of the licence and carry that with the dvla sheet you are supposed to download for the car hire company. We also have laminated photocopies of our passport photo page which we use as ID as we always leave the originals in the safe.

For the USA, the DVLA document is not required or even understood by us rental companies. It’s as useless as an international driving permit

Hiya Warkman - yeap, whilst the counterpart has been obsolete since 2015 US car suppliers never understood the blasted thing, nor did they require it as the US don't recognise our driving penalties... somehow I think mine may still be in the filing cabinet tho, perhaps a ripping up ceremony is due

Hi All i bit the bullet and sent off for my new licence. Done online on a friday arrived the following wednesday, i'm just pleased i don't need to carry my passport around with me.
