We had a suggested tip of 30% on our bill from Kobe in May 2019, and that was after tax not before. We were in the normal restaurant and not at the “display” table.

You’re a braver man than me. I wouldn’t start off assuming no tip at all, and certainly not in a place I might want to go back to. Even 10% won’t be well received I don’t think.

I don’t particularly agree with it, but I’m resigned now to starting off at 15%. I won’t be going any higher no matter what happens and they’d have to seriously mess up to get less. I’m just going to budget it in as a cost of doing business there and stop worrying about it.

If you want to be waited upon , ît comes with a gratuity expectation in the US. Maybe try Japan, there's no tipping culture there ... and they have Disney too

Similarly, if you know you aren't going to pay someone for mowing your lawn, then don't hire a gardener to mow your lawn in the first place.

I think you're all really cheeky and a little rude.
I'm well aware that we can choose to eat QS thank you - and if we wanted to go to Japan we would do, thank you for your unwanted advice too!
Let me make it clear - we have never complained about tipping. We've been going to the US for 25 years and have always tipped wherever we've stayed - and usually tipped well. We also tip in the UK and Europe, though not as much.
I originally only objected to the fact that tip % has gone up from 10% over the years, to the 15-25% that it is now - not the actual tipping, meal prices, service or the culture.
I've been on the Dibb for enough years to know that sometimes mob mentality takes over on threads like this - presumably you were all affected!
I'm out.

I have to say I have noticed it on this site and also a couple of cruise sites I am on, and it apears to me that British people almost use tipping as a way of showing off how much money they have and trying to demean people who save up for a once in a life time experience that they couldn't normally afford and object to then having to pay a substantial amount more again just because the employers dont want to pay their staff properly.

Can you go back and look at the post of yours I quoted please: https://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/sho...4&postcount=89

You can see that you didn't mention anything about not objecting to tipping. In fact it came across as the complete opposite. I'm sorry if you thought I was being rude or cheeky, it wasn't my intent. What I do find rude and cheeky though are people who visit another country and then complain about their customs.

I was aware what you were answering, and had you followed my comments earlier you would have realised I was querying someone else's thoughts on what constituted service - nothing else.
If your last comment refers to me then you're out of order as we've travelled all over the world and always respect other cultures and expectations.
I said in my last post 'I'm out' and this time I am, I won't answer again for someone to be rude.

You won't see this because you're "out" but I apologised if you felt I was rude and cheeky. If my last comment referred to you I would have stated you rather than generic "people". It was not aimed at you personally.
