We went in 2017 (feels like yesterday!)... but to the smoky mountains, there is nothing in Knoxville. Fantastic week in a cabin. I did a trip report if you want to take a look

If you don't want to stay in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, you could stay in Townsend to be quieter, or Sieverville.
Knoxville is an hour drive (35 miles) from Gatlinburg. Unless you are visiting family I would not stay in Knoxville as a base for the mountains.

Ahhhhh thanks everyone we are visiting my husbands dad. He's lived out there for a few years and we haven't been out to visit yet! What are the best airports to change at?

We stayed In Knoxville- there isn’t a huge amount there but it’s a nice place. The baseball was good fun.

I haven't been yet, but after a lot of research before picking a hotel, I was advised to fly into Knoxville, but not stay there as a base for the Smoky Mountains. We're staying in Townsend, but Pigeon Forge also seemed like a good option.

Hi,

We flew from UK to Washington then an internal flight to Knoxville.

Hired a car then drove to Gatlinburg for a cabin stay

At the time, Pigeon Forge had the feel of International Drive - quite full on touristy.
