A lot of the external DVD players do seem to say they need WinDVD software. The Lenovo one Keith posted mentioned it.

I might consider the Lenovo one as it’s a brand name I’ve actually heard of rather than some random Chinese company (admittedly Lenovo is a Chinese company itself). Plus I have Lenovo laptops at home and work.

Ref DVD software. From memory Windows 7 dind't include the software to play DVDs which is why a lot of DVD drives came bundled with something like WINdvd. I can't remember whether Windows 8 was able to play DVDs because I tried to avoid that version of Windows like the plague (my choice).

Out of the Box Windows 10 does not have the codecs (plugins) required to play DVD video streams but installing a free product such as VLC sorts that out. But I don't know if VLC understands the folder structure of a DVD disk - maybe someone else can comment?

EDIT: Just checked - VLC does appear to support DVD and BluRay playback and also gives you the ability to playback HD and UHD streams from devices which are capable of recording in HD/UHD

Sorry - off topic but it seemed relevant for the thread.

If buy the cheap one for as often as you’ll use it.

videolan/vlc/index.en-GB.html. VLC will play just about anything if you find you need some software.

Thank you all for your advice.

My Son came around today to do some work on the PC and he liked the one Keith recommended so I have ordered that.
Be here tomorrow so he can come back around and sort it for me.
