Flesh eating bacteria cases Gulf Coast

Hi all,

Don't want to sound like a harbringing of doom but don't think I've seen this mentioned on here but another case of this was announced on news again over here. Third case we've heard about it the past two weeks since we've been here. My other half has banned us from going to the gulf coast because of it. News saying young children, elderly and people with low immune systems are most vulnerable and should avoid swimming in certain waters and avoid under cooked sea food. Scary stuff. BTW we aren't going now as I had a weakened immune system for quite a bit last year so not risking it

I have been on the gulf coast two weeks and swimming in sea every day and most of us have had cut or insect bite - yes people are talking about it but water is gorgeous . Don’t let it put you off .we are all still fine xx

Yes, it was in the Gulf area (near Destin I think), the bacteria is fresh water based. Swimming in the ocean is fine. And even in fresh water, the risk is very minimal. Just be sure to avoid if you have any cuts, scrapes or open wounds.

The water is more polluted in the Gulf than here in the U.K. - don’t be fooled by how clear it looks.

Official guidance suggests no swimming if you have any cuts and there is another thread open somewhere on here regarding the same subject
