We opted for a San Francisco area holiday a couple of years ago as something different which included a stint in Vegas.
Vegas is somewhere that I think you should visit at least once but for us it seemed all very commercial, the Fremont Street part was more enjoyable as it was how I expected Vegas to look. The hotels all along the main 'strip' are certainly worth a look - go in wander round and move on to the next. Would we go again? Maybe, but there's no rush to go. Likewise with San Francisco, it was good to see but wouldn't go back. Monterey Bay, and the Grand Canyon however were fantastic. I was not expecting much of the Grand Canyon - may be a little impressive based on the stuff I'd seen on TV etc. but my goodness seeing it 'in the flesh' was genuinely mind blowing - so I would certainly recommend a detour over there if you get the chance. As I alluded to earlier you summed up Vegas exactly as we did. Are we glad we did it - certainly Would we go again - no.
We enjoyed SF but it was so cold at the end of June. But the trips to Yosemite, Carmel and Monterey were lovely. Went on all three cable cars for their entire lengths. Mark Twain once said the coldest winter that he experienced was summer in San Francisco. Mick

Thankfully it was quite warm in SF, the part that will stick in my head unfortunately was the number of homeless people littering the streets, literally strewn all around the pavements especially early in the mornings and towards dusk which made going out in the evening not a pleasant experience, add to that the needles etc. all made for an eye opening time. Granted our hotel was a little out of the main financial area, and we did walk everywhere, but took the edge off our short stay there.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn on Van Ness/California Street. We were on a pretty high floor and could see a considerable length of California Street and the terminus of the CS cable car was a 5 minute walk from the hotel. So we waited until we could see the cable car approaching from the hotel room and had time to get down to the stop.
Sadly we also saw loads of homeless guys pushing supermarket carts around collecting aluminium cans. There must have been recycling places nearby who paid for them. Not as bad though as the guys thrusting business cards for "escort girls" into my hands as we both walked along the Strip in LV on our first evening. Mick

Just to add I've really no idea why Joan wanted to take a photo of Macy's in Union Square. Once you've been to one Macy's you've been to them all I said.
