Mobile Help with a gaming PC for son

My 11 year old son has asked for a gaming PC for Xmas. I’m not very technical, and don’t understand RAM, graphic cards etc. Could anyone help me and point me in the best direction to find a mid-range gaming PC please.

I've bought PC's twice from PC Specialist and found the prices very competitive compared to other retailers.

Its hard to recommend a specific PC for gaming, as everyone has their own preferences on cases, graphics cards etc.

Maybe this would be a good start. They recommend PC's dependent on the game being played on it :-

If you know which games he will play then you can look at the specification on the games sites and that will give you a good clue as to what to look for. For most you need 8Gb RAM and a seperate graphics card. Here is a recent article on the matter wepc/tips/how-much-r...ed-for-gaming/

I too bought one from pc specialist a few years ago and it was good, when I upgraded I found them a bit too expensive so went elsewhere.

Theres 2 options really, you can buy an off the shelf one from places like pc world but in todays market they go out of date so quickly and some cant be updated with new graphic cards, memory etc

Second and my favourite option is to get one made for you that can be upgraded, that way in a couple of years time if a part is struggling then you can just buy what you need and slot it in.

Plenty of PC shops on line that will let you build to what spec you want and are more than willing to help you out with technical questions, you will need to get in touch with them soon as some can have a wait time whilst they build it for you.

My son (11) bought one with his birthday money and money he’d saved from Xmas. We bought through an online store that builds them from refurbished machines. They are based locally to us. The spec he went for was a 1/3 of the price of buying brand new. Knowing they go out of date fairly quickly he was happy with the price. He mainly plays fortnite at the moment as he’s also got other consoles and I refuse to buy the same game on another platform! He can also use it for his homework, which was a requirement.

As has been said, work out what you need and go from there. My son had done a lot of research and knew what he wanted.

Here’s an idea... would he be interested in learning to build it himself? The parts aren’t particularly expensive in their own right, if you got him a book or found some websites then he could make a wish list of parts, (there are PC builder widgets which work out compatibility)
otherwise Pc world generally isn’t great value (and getting someone more clued up then yourself in there is a challenge in itself!) so have a little look on social media and see you you can find someone who builds them who could make recommendations based on his games (as certain games don’t require massive upgrades, just decent graphics capability)

What's the budget? Does he play the latest FPS games like Call of Duty?

This is a good article- techradar/uk/news/co...n-2015-1304263
