holiday insurance and reintroduction of restrictions
what happens if there are no travel restrictions in place, then a few days before you are due to fly they impose travel restrictions due to covid. if they cancel flights would you be covered on the holiday insurance policy for loss of holiday.
I rang staysure and they said no you wouldn't so unless you can cancel or move your flights and hotel within such a short space of time you could end up losing a lot of money is this correct as it seems a big gamble |

Yes sadly this does seem like the way now. Because COVID is a known event they will not insure you for cancellation should the FCO advise against travel.
With DIY you are stuffed if this happens (like me next year) but if you have a package booked I think they have to cancel it. |

I believe if the FCO advice is currently in place (now for US) when you book the holiday then any new insurance bought now will not cover cancellation for Covid because it's a known event/risk you cannot currently travel.
Likewise if you book now while FCO advice in place and then buy insurance in a few weeks or months it is unlikely to cover earlier spend as you took the risk when booking not them. If the FCO advice is not in place when you book (ie now for Italy) and you buy new insurance now that has cancellation cover then if the rules change you'd be able to claim. There are plenty of Dinners who say they are insured for new bookings but I cannot find the same cover people are starting. It's also dubious if you'd have cancellation for any other reason as you're original booking is against FCO advice. Personally I'm waiting for it to be lifted before committing any more money. |
