Paul.
They can split you up and you can't guarantee people will move for you, only way to book seats for free iis if one of the kids has additional needs such as Autism x

Delta split a mum and 2 small children up on our flight. Even though I had booked my seat next to my family, I volunteered to move as the 6 year old daugher was sat next to me. Being a very nervous flyer I didn't want the stress and responsibility of someone elses small child next to me! Had the mother been allocated the seat next to me theres no way I would of given up my seat.
So its not just the stress of the family that haven't booked seats being split up, its the stress of the passenger they get to sit next to who have an unspoken responsibility to keep an eye on them.
I do agree there should be a ban on charging for seat allocation!
