i want to buy a new laptop
but i get so confused with all the tech speak, e.g Intel celeron, AMD etc
basically all i want is to have updated software, a built in webcam, a decent amount of memory and speed, to be able to watch and record dvds. record CDs. I dont need to play games - well apart from those on FB I dont want to spend a huge amount, but i dont like the little netbooks. any advice would be lovely thanks

It can be bewildering - it depends really on your budget. Personally if you can go to £400 - £450 you will get a very decent laptop for this money.
I would look for windows 7 OS, at least 2 Gbytes of RAM memory, more will be better, and at least an intel centrino, or i3/i5 processor, and minimum 300 gbyte hard drive. I quite like Dell machines and this inspiron if the link works at £379 will do you very well. very similar to this dell sold by tesco but this lenovo (good reputation for quality) is better value and more RAM and bigger hard drive at £399 decent toshiba at John Lewis for £370 good luck with your search edited to add also buy a portable hard drive to back up your important data and things like photos - one of the most frequent things to fail on a laptop is the hard drive as laptops invariably end up getting moved around while it is still writing also avoid putting laptops on things like carpets/bed which can block the air cooling ports
