Gluten free experts !

Hi. My neighbour is on a strict gluten free diet and I wanted to make him some homemade gluten free fudge for Christmas …. Can I ask someone who is gluten free to confirm for me that the following ingredients for gluten free fudge are in fact gluten free and I won’t poison him if I make him some slow cooker fudge using them !
Thanks to anyone who can help keep me right ….

Chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla essence and unsalted butter.

You need to check the ingredients for all of them, and any allergy warnings. Generally, they should be fine, and shouldn't contain any gluten. However, chocolate in particular often has a 'may contain' warning on, as it can be produced on the same line as something else that has contained gluten.

As long as you've got no wheat, barley, rye or oats highlighted in bold, and you have no may contain warning, then you're good to go.

And what a lovely idea, I'm sure your neighbour will be very touched. Just one thing I'd do, as us gluten-free people can be a suspicious bunch! Either tell him in person or put a little tag on confirming you have checked all the ingredients and it is completely safe with no may contain warnings. He should feel very reassured.

Oh, and just one more thing (sorry!). Please make sure it is a fresh butter, and hasn't been used by anyone (as in, someone who could have made a sandwich or toast, spread butter, then inadvertently put the knife back into the butter therefore contaminating it). That is really important, even a crumb can be enough to make a coeliac very ill.

Fab advice-thank you. He is really strict about it so I was planning on a note with ingredients. Good thing is his wife eats what he doesn’t. Thanks again.

No problem at all. It can be difficult to get your head around when you're actually gluten free, never mind when you're not!
