Gluten free and Vegetarian

Hi Dibbers, help please!

We have visitors next week for lunch, and one of them is gluten free vegetarian. Also two children.

Suggestions please!

So far all I have come up with is DUST SALAD

I just had a quick google and found this:

bbcgoodfood/recipes/...tarian-recipes

I am not vegetarian (but I love vegetables) nor am I gluten intolerant, so you might find someone with better options! Good luck, I am sure it will be delicious whatever you make!

I am gluten free and vegetarian! What kind of things are you looking to make? Or to make it easier, what would you think about making if they weren't GF vegetarian, and we can work from there!

TBH, it can be rough to be both. Especially if you want to do some kind of meat substitute as these almost all have gluten in for texture. Although there are some exceptions, Beyond Burgers or Iceland's No Moo burgers contain no gluten ingredients for example.

What would you normally serve? Might be easier to start with that and work backwards than come up with something completely new. Although this is probably where you're going to say meat on bread.

But anything rice or potato based would be a good start. I'd have been very happy with a beyond burger, potato salad (or a jacket spud) and a green salad for a summer lunch in my vegetarian days.

While I wait for an answer, I'll just pop a few things up that you need to consider.

Are they coeliac, or is it an intolerance? If an intolerance they might be able to handle some cross contamination (but you definitely need to confirm this with them), if coeliac they can't.

This means you need to be really aware in the kitchen. If possible, you need to prepare their food in a different area of the kitchen, or at least be really vigilent in wiping down. No shared utensils. If using butter/spreads/jam or anything like that, then essentially they need a separate one, as even the tiniest crumb can make a coeliac ill ( that isn't being overdramatic unfortunately, it's just how it is).

Things you need to look out for on labels are BROW - barley, rye, oats and wheat. All of these ingredients should be highlight in bold. You also need to look out for any may contain warnings on labels, as Coeliacs cannot tolerate these. Just to clarify with oats, they don't contain gluten themselves, but are usually processed on the same line, so if using oats it needs to specify gluten free oats.

All of the above probably sounds like a right pain, but it's easier than it sounds I promise.

If you're in to baking, then Becky Excell has an amazing gluten free blog and also a FB group. She brought out a cookbook last year which is fab, but their are tons of amazing recipes on her blog. They are very easy and work really well, and you would honestly never know the cakes and bakes were gluten free.

If you want really simple, jacket potatoes are easy, and you can do all kinds of different toppings depending on how ambitious you want to get! Personally I'm happy with cheese, cheese and coleslaw or cheese and beans (not that I love cheese or anything! ). Cold toppings go well with salad. Kids are likely to eat jacket spuds too.

Pasta is easy. Gluten free pasta is actually not bad, my kids happily eat it when they come over to visit and can't tell the difference. We use Morrisons the most, just because it's closer, but Asda is fine too if you have one nearby (and other supermarkets sell it too, I just haven't tried them!). Simple tomato based sauce. Again, you could do a salad to go with it.

If you want to do pickie type things, Aldi and Lidl both have a range of things like sweet potato pakoras and other vegetarian pakoras, these are really nice with some hummous or dip and are all labelled up as GF and vegetarian. Also spanish ommlette tends to be GF, just check the label. Aldi also do a really nice Mediterranean crustless tart which is GF (the label doesn't specifically say it is but it doesn't need to say, there just needs to be none of the ingredients I mentioned above in bold and no may contain warnings)

I probably wouldn't bother with GF bread, it's expensive and not the best (although the Morrisons white GF rolls are £1 for a pack of 4 and really nice).

Just make sure you check EVERY label, as gluten can turn up in the strangest of places (salad bags for example!)

Oh, above post has reminded me that Sainsbury's carry a line of deli bites called Gosh that has really good sweet potato pakora. I still pick these up whenever I'm in one of their stores even though I'm no longer veggie or gluten free. Pretty sure everything from them is both vegan and gluten free, but obviously check the labels.

For pudding, Eton Mess is an easy summer classic which is also GF friendly.

They have this range in Lidl too, and also in Tesco. They're really nice.
