Stampeding to Calgary - a bit late! 10th August Unexpected Shopping Day

Part One
Managed about 5 hours sleep and then sort of dozed for another 2-3 when ds messaged to say floor fitter arrived, did I want to add anything to the notes I'd left? Anyway we then decided to get up and go out for breakfast in Banff and do the clothes shopping I needed.

We were on the road for 7 and everywhere was quiet. It wasn't as hazy as yesterday but not sure if that is how it works, clears overnight and then gets worse again throughout the day? It was a very easy drive to Banff and it is a super pretty main street, however they don't do early opening so we carried on through and stopped at Bow River Falls for a photo op.

As Gunna, Jocat and others have said, photos don't do it justice however good they are. These are mine from my phone by the way, dh will have much better ones I'm sure. We couldn't do much else without footwear so had to leave there and drive back into Banff. We found a 3 hour spot and then headed to Tim Hortons as we had promised dd we would do our first breakfast there - it was the other side of town to where we had parked but we did it and had sausage biscuits, coffee and timbits to fuel us for shopping!

Most of Banff seems to be gifty specialist shops so we weren't quite sure where to get stuff. DH said to get things I wanted and would wear again rather than throwaway stuff so that is what I did - 2 outfits and sandals later : North Face I think it was a bit cheaper than here but I have always liked their stuff so I will wear it again, maybe sooner than planned if my case doesn't show! We were surprised how late everything opens but doesn't stay open later in the evening, however when we talked to the shop assistants the reason became clearer!

The guy in North Face said he goes camping after work quite often even on a work day so I guess early finish and late start fits that life style. He was also telling us that last week the fires were so bad on the Wednesday (Jocat were you in Banff then?)that ash was falling out of the sky and it looked like the world was about to end with the streets covered in ash! The shoe shop guy was saying the same thing re camping/climbing before and after work! We discovered what a small world it really is now as he had attended the same college in Winchester as my daughter at the same time, due to him being brought up in the Falkland Islands! They didn't remember each other though despite have the same lecturer for psychology!

By this time we were starting to flag and it had got quite hot so we headed back to the car and decided to go back to the hotel via Safeway. We found it no problem, wandered around a bit aimlessly but got breakfast fixings ()salad, fruit, cold meat and some steaks to put on the bbq one evening. We also picked up some hot pick and mix chinese for lunch. We arrived back at 12, and enjoyed our lunch followed by a chat with dd via Whatsapp.

Currently we are thinking of making a picnic and heading out somewhere later - watch this space!

Brilliant photos, scenery looks beautiful!

Glad you were able to get some clothes.

It's interesting to gain snippets of info from the locals, I love that the shops open to suit the workers!

Hope you enjoy the rest of your day

Lovely photos this morning and glad you managed to get some clothes and sandals.

We arrived in Banff on the Thursday and stayed until the following Tuesday, so it sounds like we missed the ash falling from the sky.

What a small world - you go all that way and find someone who went to college by you.

Part 2

As it turned out we both fell asleep and so didn't get out again. Sat and read on the balcony for a while, chicken salad and ice cream for tea before heading to bed around 10. I think the early start caught up with us!
