We were in Washington in June and stayed at the State Plaza Hotel which is located in Foggy Bottom. Really lovely place.
Literally a 10 minute walk to the White House and 15-20 minutes to the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Memorial. About 30 minutes to the FREE museums as well which we walked to. Can recommend the Hop on Hop off tour as well. Bus stop on the way to the Lincoln Memorial. Worth every cent! Hope you enjoy because I absolutely fell in the love with Washington. If you are there over a weekend you must visit the food trucks that park up between the Washington Memorial and the Capital Building.

We stayed in the Westinn Downtown in April, just off Thomas Circle, and found it ideal as we had long days, out early, back early evening after dinner, so weren't going back out. Less than 10 minutes to White House, National Mall about 15 minutes.
Georgetown is nice if you plan going out in evening.

Haven't booked anywhere as yet, but we are planning on going next year and are looking at Foggy Bottom as an area.

We stayed at the Hilton in Arlington, there's a metro station right outside with great links to DC.

We stayed at the residence inn in Arlington, it was a less than 5 mins walk to the pentagon which has a metro station, and we had a 2 bedroom suite with breakfast, WiFi and evening reception (drinks and food) for less than the cost of a room in dc. It was a lovely area to stay and he National mall was 2 stops away on the metro line.

We have just stayed 3 nights at the Fairmont which was less than 10 minutes from Georgetown and about 20 to Whitehouse and also Lincoln Memorial.
I had been before on business and chose the location to be nearer to Georgetown which in my opinion is where the decent restaurants and shops are and has some evening atmosphere (it's surprising how dead the city is at night (away from the main tourist spots). In reality wherever you stay could involve a lot of walking. Apart from the easy walks to Georgetown we used Lyft/Uber at the start and end of each day to get us where we wanted (and still walked nearly 10 miles each day). Cost was between $6 - $10 which for 4 of us was a lot cheaper than the metro (there is a circulatory bus you can get for $1 but unsure of the route or times). |

I stayed in JW Marriott opposite Whitehouse. Near everything. Great location. Quick walk to White House, the Mall, Capitol, all the museum's, Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial.

We stayed on P Street off DuPont Circle. We really liked the location but as others have said there's a lot of walking in Washington DC!
