Everglades trip - stay in Miami or Naples area

Hi, we are taking a trip to the Everglades in September for the day and wondering whether it would be best to stay for the night in Miami area or go the other way up past Naples for the night before coming back to Orlando.

Has anyone done this and could recommend somewhere to stay?

If you just want somewhere to sleep for the night before returning to Orlando, we have always stayed in Homestead or Florida City. (Miami side not far from the Park) There are several decent hotels in the area. If you want a bit more night life, good dining, Naples is better but quite a hike after a busy day even on the fast route.
