would you risk a non through ticket?

Hi

Would you ever risk booking your own small flights to get to a bigger airport for cheaper flights? Say Glasgow to London, travel the night before would be no probs then I assume a flexible ticket would be better for the hop home afterwards? How about luggage on a short flight, can you generally add holiday type luggage onto an internal flight?

All experiences very welcome.

We did for the Newcastle to London hop. Flew down the night before. On the way back gave ourselves 5 hours which we didn’t need but I didn’t want to risk it.
We would have gone for the train or even a coach if necessary.

I’m not sure that I would as the worry about it would ruin my build up! If I was going to though I’d do as you say and do an overnight stay on the way. The way back is less of an issue as rearranging flights would eat into your holiday and would generally be cheaper than rearranging a transatlantic flight.

We did it once with AIr France where we had connecting flights in Newark going onto Louisvile with United.

Our Air France flight got cancelled and we got put on a later flight.

United were not interested about our delays and issues and said you have missed your flight so you have lost it.

Would never do it again !

Would not do it on the same day. Would do it the night before so a backup plan could be done (train, coach etc).

If using BA from GLA to a London airport you have a choice of Economy or Business, if for example you click on Economy it then goes to a second page which shows Economy Basic (highlights in red Hand Baggage Only), Economy Plus (which allows 1 x 23kg checked baggage allowance- and also a Business fare. So that shows which fare allows what baggage is allowed and it doesn't differentiate between "holiday tyoe" luggage or normal cases. Hope that explanation makes sense. Luggage on 2 separate PNR's (references) would not be through checked so allow time for collection and recheck in if you don't have an overnight stop.

For your return journey you can buy a flexible ticket if you wish but they will be the highest cost possible as they are fully refundable and fully changeable without charge. If you chose a lower fare just make sure that you allow enough time for delays to an incoming flight, terminal transfers if appicable, recheck-in and security.

An Economy Plus fare may offer a Same Day Change for free but the rules are a little complicated and the change is not guaranteed.

Other airlines providing domestic journeys may have different systems and different rules.

if anything it'd be down the night before and airport hotel then due to land at 6.35am and a short flight home at either 09.20 or 11.35. 9.20 would be better, would that be long enough to pick up bags and recheck in?

Are you familiar with the airport you are coming into on the way home?

Without knowing where you are coming in from, which terminal you would land at and which airport for the inbound journey it isn't possible to give any ideas - sorry.

I would book 11:35 for the flight home.

You will make 9:20 if you land on time, But an hours delay and then a delay in customs could leave you in a panic.

You will also have to collect bags, change terminals and check in again. When we did it there was a computer failure and chaos at check in. We were hand luggage only and had done online check in so could avoid the chaos. Not that It helped as all flights were cancelled or delayed for hours. But that was an unusual day.

We actually wished we’d booked a train home and just got the Heathrow express to Paddington and then a train from kings cross. Less stressful and we would have been home earlier.

sorry, totally not used to bigger airports, coming in glasgow - gatwick - mco and the reverse. Probably use BA for the Glasgow - London return and Virgin for the transatlantic.
