My friend has asked for help on Florida planning but we always stay in a villa so Im clueless on the hotels.

It's a bit like asking what villa is best ... without a bit more info it's an impossible question. Partysize, budget, what they plan to do in Florida, if they will have a car ages of any kids , might be a start

2 adults, 2 kids (9 and 7). More than likely hire a car. Mainly Disney.
They have no idea of budget at this early stage.

Although we have stayed mostly onsite we have stayed at a few different hotels offsite for short or last minute trips. In my opinion, the best location compared to cost is at the Marriott Village at Lake Buena Vista. There are three Marriott hotels there on a very pleasant complex, it is a stone's throw from the Disney entrance at Disney Springs (still need a car) and has a few restaurants in walking distance (including our favourite - Bahama Breeze). There are cheaper deals but, for the location vs cost, this is the absolute best IMO

Don't know price range, but I can't recommend the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress highly enough. We got married there 2 years ago and have just returned from two weeks there again. Stunning resort, and minutes from all the Disney parks. 3-4 minute drive from Disney Springs as well. Get a pool facing room like we did and if high enough (we were on the 15 floor) you have a view of all of Disney's fireworks from your room.

May be worth them looking at one of the Disney Springs hotels, as these are a short walk from Disney Springs, and for the time being at least, from Crossroads and the restaurants there.
You also get the 60 day FP booking window, EMH access, and regular buses to the four main parks. TBH, with SSR/OKW being unavailable for our visit next November, we have booked the Doubletree by Hilton for our stay, given that you get most of the benefits for guests staying on-site. However, if they are planning on going next year, it could be more cost effective to book a moderate hotel and get free QSDP. This would mean no worries about cost of food in the parks or at Disney Springs. Just for comparison, when I booked the Doubletree, 11 nights was £1,331 against Coronado Springs at £1,984, so approx £60/day food included.

As well as the disney springs hotels on hotel boulevard there is a row of hotels at bonnet creek which is just behind disney's Caribbean beach resort so fairly central to property. These hotels allow you to use the pools and facilities at the others including a lazy river and at least one has studios/condos in case they would like to prepare some meals/do some easy laundry and have a separate bedroom. These also have their own buses to the theme parks and are in a really good location on property for getting to most of the parks in under 15 minutes.
