Love hearing the camp stories although not about the snakes

At DD's camp they have a nurse on site, DD had a reaction to something and both eyes swelled up late one night, she went straight to the 'Wellness Center' the nurse put drops in her eyes and gave her antihistamines, told her to come back first thing in the morning, did the same but she was a lot better. It took a couple of days to come right but I was very happy with the way they looked after her.

Someone from the camp my daughter is at has just been sent home for using her asthma pump after a lake swim. They are water sports people so had so swim in a freezing cold lake (they are up near Canada) with pollen floating on it. She didn’t have an attack, just wheezy after the shock of the water. My DD was the same but didn’t take her blue inhaler after.

I sort of get it but they had to declare their asthma right at the start of the selection process. My DD is now worrying a little as she doesn’t want to be the next one sent home. She was given her camp last November so an early placement. If it had been a southern USA camp, the water would have been warmer and they would have been OK. Shame the camp took her on as she might have been offered a more southerly camp a week or two later. Hope my DD manages to stay. The other girl cried on her shoulder yesterday so she is a bit upset herself.

Oh no that is shame but I don't understand as I expected that they should their health record and I don't understand why they send her home?

Oh that is quite upset for her. Hope your DD is okay.

I’m not sure either. My DD had to have a GP sign everything off for her asthma. She is a bit wobbly and hoping she isn’t next. Maybe there was more to it that my DD doesn’t know about. I am a little concerned now though that she won’t take her inhaler if she needs it.

I hope your dd is ok, my dd also had to have health records disclosed. That poor girl must be so upset. My dd is on day 3 and is in Toronto before moving to camp on Thursday.

My best friends daughter is in the Pennsylvania camp, and having an amazing time, dont think she wants to come home at the end! It looks so much fun, wish I had been able to do something like that when I was her age!

Hey fellow CA parents. Thought I’d come back to give a little update on the past week or 2 in the hope that it may reassure you about how we’ve found CA in the event things don’t go quite to plan!..

First of all - Isabel absolutely loves Camp Small Valley. It’s a Girl Guide Camp and seems very similar to UK Guide camps that DD has helped run here. Unfortunately she has been ill since the day she arrived (she’d actually started with a swollen back gum/cheek 5 days before she left, but we hoped a week of penicillin would sort her out - it didn’t )

In the last 2 weeks, the camp director has personally taken her to a dentist, the ER, another dentist and finally an oral surgeon, who said she has a terrible infection in her wisdom tooth, that’s spread to her cheek and needs to be removed urgently. I offered Izzy (& the camp director by email), to book a flight and bring her home on Sunday, but Izzy was crying - desperate to stay, and the director seems just as keen to take care of her!

I was concerned that, in their position, the camp may justifiably want to cut their losses and send her home and I emailed the director myself to offer this solution. The director however has been emailing me, saying how much they enjoy having Izzy there and that they promise to take care of her while she recovers! She has sorted out all the insurance necessary with CA head office (today’s surgery alone is $2250 .)

Izzy should be going into surgery just about now to have all 4 of her wisdom teeth removed!

It’s been so worrying but the camp and Camp America have been so kind- to Isabel and us and sorted all the care she needs as well as promising to look after her while she recovers. I’d read another Dibber who’d said her daughter didn’t like her camp, and she was basically left to sort her on way home alone but I can honestly say our experience has been so different. Hopefully this time next week, Izzy will be all recovered and get stuck into enjoying the rest of the summer. If she’s enjoyed it so far, despite being so ill, it should be amazing when she’s fit!

So if you are worrying about your own CA kids, I hope they get the kind of experience my DD has had. A stressful and worrying time has been made a bit easier for us, thank goodness.

Hope your dd recovers quickly and you are ok. It’s so good to hear positive stories, my dd has been in Canada for 10 days and is loving it!
I didn’t expect her to last the week, she was so upset leaving but has really surprised me and I’m so proud of her. The children are arriving tomorrow so things could change when the hard work starts!
Keep us updated on her Adventures
