Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Smoky mountains - Williamsburg - Washington DC - New York) Day 8
Day 8 - Friday 7th April 2017
We woke at 8...the best lay in ever! The cereal was all gone so it was porridge for breakfast (I brought a few of the sachets with me) and we used up the orange juice and coffee. We left the cabin at 1030 and quickly discovered we weren't going anywhere fast. There was some car convention in town that takes places twice a year and was starting for the weekend. The schools were being let out early and traffic by Saturday would apparently be gridlocked! I had wanted to pop into the 'Lil Dolly's' store for a quick look. This was such a lovely shop with lots of quilts/throws. I would have got one if it wasn't for luggage allowances. They kindly gave Georgia a basket with some chocolate eggs in for Easter. We stopped by the Gatlinburg welcome centre and checked that the trail for Grotto Falls would be open, we were pleased to find out that it was, the first day this season apparently. The drive to Roaring fork was simple but we did think we had made a wrong turn getting to the trail as the signs were unclear. Luckily we came upon it and were able to grab the last parking slot. There are facilities here but they are not nice. We could see on the mountains that it had snowed and we were lucky to find a few small patches for a mini snowball fight! The falls were pretty and you could walk behind them. I think in total it took us about 2 hours but that included a stop at the top to eat peanut butter sandwiches, crisps and apples. Georgia had wanted to return to Dollywood and so we chose to spend the rest of the afternoon there, arriving about 3 and staying till it closed at 7. Knowing the car convention was on we took the back roads which were a lot longer than they had looked on the map! Inside Dolly's RV New coaster being built Wearing the new Converse and coat It was so late by the time we got out and made our way through the traffic that we had to abandon plans to cook something in the cabin and stopped at Mcdonalds instead. This was a little more expensive than at home coming to about $18 for 2 meals and a happy meal.
