A Taste of Africa! - JIKO Part 3

We’d loved our stay at AKL so much we really didn’t want to leave, so decided to have our final WDW dinner at JIKO.

We both started with the Cucumber, Tomato and Red Onion Salad. It was topped with peppery Arugula and had a Cottage Cheese and Watermelon Dressing.
The combination sounds a bit weird, but it was very good. It was refreshing but not overly tart, with a touch of sweetness – quite delicate. Perfectly palate cleansing we thought.

Paul had been down to the restaurant earlier to chat with the chef about alternative vegetarian options. He likes the Tandoori Tofu with Grains and Veggies, but not enough to eat it twice in one week.
The chef said they could combine the tofu with almost anything else on the menu. So he chose the Malay Curry with artichokes, potatoes and grilled onions (normally served with shrimp)
It appeared a bit dry to me, but Paul assured me it was not as dry as it looked. I wish I could describe it too you, but for some strange reason I never sampled any of it. Too busy tucking into my own food probably.
He said it was quite spicy, but he enjoys spicy food and might well choose it again when we return in May.

I had the Berbere Braised Lamb Shank.
Delicious as always, the tender meat just fell off the bone and the spicy tomato and garlic sauce was mopped up by the couscous and fresh baby spinach. I love this dish, but it defeats me every time. Too much meat!

Wine-wise, tonight I had my usual Fairview Viognier to begin with and Paul had a glass of Rudera Shiraz 03, again from the Stellenbosch region.
We then both went on to enjoy a couple of glasses of Vergelegen Estate Merlot. Why is it that you discover the most fabulous wine of the holiday on the last night?

We were having a very relaxed evening and the wine was flowing well, so we didn’t want a dessert, preferring to have the Cheese Platter.
There were three goat’s cheeses and two sheep’s cheeses. They were all very tasty and we soon polished off the lot!
We both would have preferred the accompanying fruit compote if it had retained some texture, rather than a smooth puree, though it did have a very nice flavour.

As usual for the last night we didn’t want our fabulous evening to end, but knowing we’d be returning to dine at JIKO soon somehow made it a little easier.

Lovley photos and honest opinions as always about the food. Thanks for sharing Sue. We'll look out for that Merlot you had on the last night. It does make things easier when you know you'll be back soon doesn't it?

Pam.
