Once you have rejected an offer and made your firm and insurance choices, the rejected offers are gone. You cannot just go back to them on results day. What happened to your son was that the Uni that gave the unconditional offer still had places at Clearing and were happy to accept his grades. The fact that they had made him an offer before was irrelevant - they don’t look at that during Clearing.

Relying on Clearing is a gamble if you want a particular course or University. It all depends on how popular the course is and how many applicants get their grades. If you want the place, you need to pick it as firm or insurance. Firming an unconditional offer means no insurance choice, but you can have a conditional as firm choice and have the unconditional as insurance.

No decisions needed yet though, May is the deadline (but this is clearly highlighted in Track) 👍

I’m sure the Head of Sixth Form will put your child’s mind at rest though too, it is a stressful time 😃
That is the problem, after parents evening it seems Stepson is not putting in the work and is laid back thinking there is plenty of time
