Lake Garda - Sirmione

We have a one way flight from Venice to Manchester. (we did have another outbound flight booked to Zadar but Ryanair cancelled)
The trip is for early October.

We are thinking about maybe flying into Verona? and heading for Lake Garda and basing ourselves there for 5 nights, before having 2 nights in Venice.

Does it matter where in Sirmione we stay, is one part more lively than the other for restaurants?

We tend to stay at the south end of the peninsula Sirmione is on as it is handier for getting elsewhere. There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants there and is handy for the bus route. Sirmione old town is lovely but gets very crowded in summer months (never been in October). The benefit of being there is the ferry stop. It is a lovely place. Enjoy.

We stayed in Desenzano del garda, half an hour on the train from Verona and you get the boat across to Sirmione. It’s far less crowded and far less expensive, there is a little harbour surrounded by restaurants. We stayed at Hotel Benaco, 5 mins walk from the station and a 10-15 min walk down to the harbour and castle. Sirmione is gorgeous but crazy busy.

Oh and treat yourself to a 1st class train ride to/from Venice, puts our trains to shame. I think it was around an hour and 15 minutes from Desenzano back to Venice, although we got off at Mestre station on the mainland to go to the airport via the airport bus.

Love Lake Garda. We have started three times in Riva Del Garda. Lovely town with lots of restaurants and ice cream shops. The ferry to the other towns is easy to use too

We’ve stayed in Riva three times too, we love it, one of our favourite places in the world!
