We’ve taken a plunge and have started up a business. We have always been self employed but contracted to a company but during this period and knowing we don’t have to save for Florida this September it felt like the right time to take the plunge and go in alone! Excited times ... we’ve also decided to get a puppy who arrives into our house in 5 weeks! Trying to make the best of a bad situation!

I think a lot of people are earning less.
I’ve had a 10% pay cut (not bad I know) and DH has had to close his shop. He’ll be able to claim 80% going forwards, but we’ll have to be careful in the interim, plus, we’ll be down a chunk at the end.
Added to the fact we’re at home more using more utilities, I used to make a profit off my mileage claim, plus DH used to eat breakfast and lunch plus a lot of tea/coffee at work from leftovers (runs a food business) and I used to have no time for brekkie, and used to get plenty of free lunches at work.
So we’re earning less, and spending more on basic bills and food shopping.
So because of these things, we won’t have more money to do something else with if that makes sense. We lost our wedding anniversary trip to Amsterdam, but will go away as soon as allowed tbh so we’re trying to be careful tone able to cover that

This is definitely the issue we have. We’ve had a refund from our minimoon and we have savings for our honeymoon, but we dare not touch it in case we need it to live. If the furlough doesn’t carry on for our industries then there’s every possibly we will have to move in with my parents and lose our house (rented) so as much as I would love to be using the money on other things we need etc, we just can’t take that risk.

A new boiler which we have needed since we moved in 3 years ago! We also had a wall put in the garage to have a proper utility last year but haven't been able to afford to do the room up due to all our holidays so we will hopefully do that too.

Edited at 10:42 PM.

We had saved a lot of money from this years holiday particularly as it was my 50th birthday holiday so we were a bit extravagant with some things. We had a December WDW trip booked too which I know we will not go on and I don’t think we will do anything instead of that either.

We are not planning on doing anything in particular, other than we have decided we will definitely do a three week trip next year, we rarely do three week trips, usually stick to two.

We are renovating 4 rooms quite largely. All furniture, decor, mild building work and full flooring. The last of what we didn't do fully when we moved in. We just keep finding problems so I hope it doesn't end up more than the 2 we had cancelled. 🤣

Have you thought about taking a mortgage holiday to free up some extra so you are not worse off?

I am lucky that I went to Florida in February but my holiday to Crete has been cancelled. Just waiting for a refund from easyjet for the flight. Not sure what I can do with £240 maybe more premium bonds. I had remortgaged in February so have money to spend on windows once I decide what I want. Final payment on my car is next month but I have that put aside already.

I'm still working and there is no risk to the business so I'm lucky there too.
