Mum used to take us to Selfridges in the 1960’s to see the windows and visit the grotto. I don’t remember seeing Father Christmas, it was one of his relatives, Uncle Holly.

It was Uptons on the high street for us. The store has long gone now, but it had a escalator (which was a wonder to us). Father Christmas always smelt funny... I think he was taken with spirits (a coping mechanism I guess).

Uncle Holly was the man , we’d always go to see him too.
