I think it depends what you want.
If you want busy and touristy, the FW. If you want to be a bit more in San Francisco where it is less touristy, then US. Personally we prefer the latter. |

We love the roof terrace at the Cheesecake Factory at Union Square, could sit there for hours watching the world go by down below.

Definitely Fisherman’s Wharf for us. We are there to hit the bigger attractions and get out. We stayed at Union Square last time and had to effectively commute on foot to most of the things that we wanted to do as they were centred on the wharf side area and just behind. The walk is not pleasant as Nob Hill, Tenderloin and Chinatown are between the two, depending on what route you take. Fisherman’s area has..
Alcatraz Ferry Fisherman’s Girardelli Dylan’s Bike Hire Lombard St Zigzags We would only have visited Union Sq the once if based near Fisherman’s .. for the Cheesecake Factory in Macy’s.. and that would have incorporated the Powell St Cable Car as an attraction. We don’t shop. The only advantage was that when we came to leave SFO, our car hire (Avis/Budget) was just a couple of blocks away and next to the Bay bridge ramp making exit from the city simple. This Summer it is the Hotel Riu, a couple of blocks back from Fisherman’s. We are only there a couple of nights before heading south and therefore placement is everything in achieving our objectives.. The Love tour in a VW bus. Christians SF ghost tour of nob hill. A Cycle up to Golden Gate park and then the Sutra Baths as we come round and back to Fisherman’s. Edited at 08:59 AM. |

We have not stayed there before, but booked on the recommendation of friends that have. It also gets good reviews.
As you have no doubt figured SFO hotel prices are frightening and what I am told to expect is good premier inn standard, but in a good location. We have avoided having a car in SFO and like last time, will pick one up as we leave. Parking is scary in price, it also saves on 3 days of car hire and we would not use it whilst in SFO in any case. We will Uber in from the airport and this time, Uber out to the airport where we pick up our car. It is on the ‘out side’ of town and in the direction we want towards Monterey.
