Best tip you would provide regarding Disney Vacation Club
Question: If your best friend came to you and said “I just discovered Disney Vacation Club. I see I have the option of buying direct from Disney, buying resale or simply renting points each time. What is your best tip you can give me regarding Disney Vacation Club?”
What would be your response to them? Jason Erpelding Lic. Real Estate Broker Buy and Sell DVC, Inc.®

My response would have many facets to it some of which may not be possible but there again I would still say it.

Do the tour, even if you are looking into buying resale. If you do buy direct, never do so on your first meeting or tour. Don’t get caught up in the holiday mood.

We broke most of the ‘rules’ when we bought in 2010.
We bought direct, financed (paid off within a couple of years), on the tour whilst on holiday! We did buy at our favourite resort (Bay Lake) but we hadn’t stayed there. So - I’d say the most important thing is to buy at a resort you would always be happy to stay at. By the way, even having broken all of the rules we would still do it all again! We’ve had so many great trips using our points in the last 10 years. We’ve treated family to trips that we could never have afforded if paying cash.

We also broke all the rules. Did a tour in 2000, signed on the dotted line immediately, borrowed the money but paid it off quickly, never looked around just bought what they showed us. We must have still had some good judgement though as we love our hone resort, have stayed there now for 20 years, we got the perfect number of points and would do it all again.
Think we were probably lucky and I would agree that you should research where you want to stay and buy there. It can be an expensive investment these days so you need to want to use it and not regret it!

I would like others repeat Tom’s suggestions.
Also research intensely for about 2 months minimum. Also learn the difference in 7 month availability between different room types. The 1 bed availability is rarely appreciated. I would also advocate, if buying for 1 beds in particular, consider buy where you would not mind staying. Think about why you are buying- is it to stay in 1 resort mainly (if so buy there) but if you’d like a different holiday each time and moving about as we do, consider 7 month availability and whether enough points for a 1 bed would be the better choice.
