Building/gas advice

We are doing up our living room and yesterday removed our old fire surround. Contemplated bricking it up but we do like a focal point and the fire is handy when it’s just chilly enough but not too cold to put the heating on.

Anyway, went online to order a new fire surround and fire last night but it seems our hole is too big (I think the right term is builders opening)?

How do we fix that? Do we need a specialist or can a bricklayer just make the hole smaller?

I deeply regret starting this

Gas Regs change all the time and I'm not sure if the metal plate we used to use with a letterbox opening for the fire to vent through is still legal. I suspect not.

However I'm pretty sure that a gas fie can go on to a straight wall if all the 'guts' of it are external.

If they protrude into the old opening how does the concrete fireback look? Is it still in one piece?

This:-

As I say I'm not up to date on Gas Safe Reg so I would speak to a qualified gas fitter.

Best I can do sorry.

There are all sorts of regulations around gas fires and having combustable materials within distances. We had to install fireboard maybe 200mm all the way around the fire.
However, the instructions that come with your fire will detail these for your specific fire. I am sure the installation manual can be found on-line. Building control will look for evidence that you have complied with these.

Thanks everyone. Gas fitter coming tomorrow to disconnect the old fire so will seek his advice.

Why is nothing ever simple?
