Esta - Middle name not included
Hi Folks, finally done my ESTA but didnt include middle names, like many others. Having gone through all the threads, i want to reapply in order to include them. Previous ESTA was approved btw. I would like to hear fron anyone who has made the same mistake and subsequently redone their ESTA. Did you have any problems getting a new one approved? Is it straightforward? I'm just concerned that doing another ESTA 3 days after the last one will flag up a problem and make things worse. Dont want to end up having to go for a Visa lol. All help much appreciated!

I've never added in the middle names and it's never been an issue for me in the last 2 visits I've made.
Edit: Just checked as I did our for next year, all approved no issues Edited at 11:38 AM. |

I want to go now!

We did ours in March, some of the party had no middle names. Travelled end of may with no issues.

I was just having the same panic, I did all our ESTAs yesterday for our trip in September and didn't include middle names. All were approved no problem.
I'd be interested to see if anyone is actually refused entry on the basis of not having their middle name included! |

All the feedback JCA is theres been no problems yet, so heres hoping. EssexSue, i agree. The question of first name on form seems deliberately ambiguous tbh, unless you click on the tiny question mark.

I, personally, re did ESTAs for my wife and daughter a month after having applied for the initial ESTA and experienced no problems whatsoever online or at customs/immigration

The question first given name probably lends itself to a double barrel name such as Ann Marie. Etc. To everyone one else your first given name is your Christian name. It doesn’t help that the uk passport has your middle names next to your Christian name. It should place these on a separate line.
The whole passport situation is a joke. Badly thought out. This year my daughter signed below the signature line only for us to be told by the passport office that it should be ok as far as the uk was concerned but she could not comment on us immigration. Fair enough but she also mentioned it was the most common reason people phone up for after receiving the passport.she said It happens all the time. I suggested putting a box there. We basically had to reapply to correct our mistake on their badly designed page. They must be making a fortune out of badly worded online process and badly designed passports. |

But you are not asked for 'first given name'. You are asked for 'First (Given) Name' - which is different - the brackets change the meaning. 'First (Given) Name' means 'First Name, i.e. Given Name'. 'Given' here qualifies 'First' and explains what is meant in this context.
Your name has 2 parts: Given Name and Family Name. All the family automatically has the same Family Name. The Given Name is the part you were given to distinguish you from all the other family members. So, if your name is 'John Henry Smith', your Given Name is 'John Henry' which distinguishes you from 'John William' etc. Yes, 'John' and 'Henry' on their own are valid names, but your parents didn't want you to be 'John Smith', they wanted you to be 'John Henry'. Of course, in day to day use, names get abbreviated, e.g. to just 'John' (or maybe in some cases to 'Henry' or 'Harry'), but on an official form it should surely be expected that your full name is required, particularly when it is related to your passport, where 'Henry' is not separated from 'John'. There has been speculation in the past couple of days as to how Michael Gove fills in his ESTA. You might think his 'first name' is 'Michael', but his Given Name is actually 'Michael Andrew'. However, he was adopted and his name at birth was different: Graeme Logan. So his 'first name' was (obviously!) 'Graeme Logan' and his 'first given name' is 'Graeme'! Words can have different meanings to the one you expect, depending on the context, so reading all the instructions carefully is essential. This is a US form, not a UK one, so needs to be interpreted as such. The US has a different version of English to the UK. They don't put 'petrol' in a car, they put 'gas', even though it is obviously a liquid and not a gas. Always read the pop-up instructions behind every '?'. |
