New York 4/7 - bakery, views and water
We now own a teenager! So we were up early again 6.30 local time and after showers headed down for the included breakfast (HIE) basic comes to mind - plastic plates and cutlery and grappling for a table at 8am. However the food range was ok - 2 types of egg 2 types of sausage, pastries, muffins, bagels, toast, oatmeal, cereals, juice, tea, coffee, fresh whole pieces of fruit, yoghurt and a little pancake machine. So we filled up here. This saved us around $50-70 comparable to restaurant breakfast if we’d eaten the same. After DD opened her cards so headed over to the PATH train to Hoboken and located Carlo’s - pleasant surpise - no queue, empty store, even double checked with staff to make sure we were in the right place. No family member seen but we ordered a caramel lobster tail, sprinkles sugar cookie, apple turnover, vanilla cupcake and a cannoli for approx $15. We sat at a little table inside and all shared. The caramel lobster tail was my fav. We had a walk east to a little green area and took some pictures of Manhattan. There isn’t much to do in Hoboken otherwise but I can imagine it’s a nice place to stay away from the hustle and bustle and there seemed to be enough bars and eateries. We got the PATH back to Manhattan but on the WTC line (world trade centre) as we had tickets to one world for 2pm. we had lots of time so we took a walk to Staten Island ferry port and asked about trip times but we would be pushing it to be back for 2pm (it was around 12) so we headed back to WTC and had half an hour in century 21 which is a huge discount department store. We headed to one world early and walked straight in with our pre booked tickets. It is an amazing experience and the views are incredible. DD requested stardust dinner for her birthday treat so we took the subway from WTC to Times Square. We got to stardust around 3 and waited in a short line for max 20 mins (note there was no queue between 4-4.30). Now we came for the experience and knew food would be fair at best which is exactly as I’d describe it - nacho stater, 4 mains, 4 sodas and one dessert and they add 15% tip to bill = $150. Ouch! We’d been out all day so took a steady walk back to the hotel to ease aching feet and escape the heat for a bit. We let rush hour settle then headed on the subway and rode the Staten Island ferry. We timed it just right for sunset and got amazing views of a lit up Liberty and Manhattan at dusk. We headed backwards to hotel via a shop, 2 more bud lights for DH and I and cold drinks for the kids.
