Exactly the same for us. Couldn't find Manchester in our budget so doing Gatwick to Tampa. Much better value but it is a longer drive for us.

This year is the second year running that October flight prices from Manchester have been ridiculous.
Virgin only have 1 outbound/inbound flight per day now whereas it was 2 before. The choice of carriers is now very limited.
We are going via Atlanta this year for the same price we paid to go Premium direct in 2017. It’s the first time we’ve ever had to fly indirect.
I decided that dropping in Atlanta was actually a better option than the travel to and from Gatwick or Heathrow.
Prices may be more competitive next October as people who want free dining are ruled out from the beginning of that month. This may reduce demand slightly

Hopefully the prices will drop, we got 2 adults & 2 kids with car Man-MCO return for a week last year during the October hols for £1060 (got 2% quidco cashback too) - we booked very last minute.
I doubt it will be that cheap again, but who knows.

We have found the same, the cost of direct from Manchester is silly, when we were looking they were all £800 each or more, that included Thomas Cook and TUI.

We are going half term and originally booked Man Mco via Boston with Virgin, they have since cancelled this route so we have been moved to the Man Atlanta Mco flight, as Wigan Lass says this is the first time we will be flying indirect, but it was that or not go at all.

We went last October (17 nights over half term). The flight prices for direct were laughable from the day Thomas Cook released them until the day we flew. We ended up indirect MAN-ATL-MCO with Virgin/Delta through Netflights, and we still paid £600pp.

We're already 2.5 hours away from Manchester, so any other airport would basically mean an extra day either side and 7+ hours to get to an airport, so it was a no go.
