Out of interest I thought I would try this, however although my booking is on the system it will not allow me to do OLCI. It just says an error has occurred, so its back to the DIBB way, Savetime and show barcode.

My thoughts exactly, it's really, really easy to do.

The bottom line is if you want to do things "by the book" then basically you need to complete savetime/check in and skip the counter. That way you have the paperwork telling you to go direct to the garage.

It takes 5 minutes of your time and rules out any possibility of having problems upon meeting a pedantic Alamo person if you haven't done things "by the book".

If you cannot complete skip the counter for whatever reason (still unknown to me - I had no issues what so ever) but you have a barcode then I think people should still try to go straight to the garage but should have it in the back of their minds that they MIGHT be sent back to the desks. Most people seem to get away with this method.

Alamo don't help at all, a really confusing and conflicting system they have.

I have done savetime and online çheck in but couldn't do skip the counter. When I looked at the conditions it says you cannot skip the counter if you have chosen the fuel option, which I had.

Interesting!

This is the official list:

In order for a reservation to be eligible for "Skip the Counter," it must meet these requirements:

• Reservation must be at a rental location that offers “Skip the Counter” Check a location for eligibility.

• Reservation must not exceed 30 days.

• Reservation must made at least 24 hours in advance.

• Reservation cannot include certain add-ons that need to be added to vehicle (i.e. fuel, mobility devices, etc.).

• Reservation cannot be prepaid or direct billed to a 3rd party (i.e. Voucher, Business Account, etc.).

• Renter must use a major credit card to secure rental (debit cards do not qualify).

I didn't select any options on my booking! Maybe this is why. Still doesn't explain how other people have completed skip the counter when they have pre-paid though, which is listed above! Weird.

I have booked via Virgin (car rental only not whole holiday) and have been directed to online check In on the confirmation email...which doesn't work. perhaps because I only booked today so I will give it a chance and have a go again tomorrow.

however, looking at the criteria above, I prepaid in advance via a debit card using a 3rd party so it seems silly for the confirmation email to send me to an online check in if its not going to work

Alamo = confusing

It will work for you. If you hire with Virgin you follow the link and just do OLCI.

Am I correct in saying that skip the counter is not available from Sanford airport?

Yes you are correct! You have to go to counter at Sanford. Although the wait time will only be a few minutes.
