ive driven over there 6 times now, and i prefer it to driving in the uk... although now i bought myself an automatic car, it has improved things somewhat.
undertaking is just a normal thing over there... and because of the multitude of idiots on the roads in the uk not observing proper motorway lane etiquette (drive in the inside lane UNLESS you are actually in the process of overtaking) i undertake cars on a regular basis - why should i have to drive across two lanes to overtake a car that isnt going as fast as me on the inside lane? i stay on the inside lane and set the cruise control to 70. its not my fault the idiot hogging the second lane is too lazy to pull into the inside lane. in fact... if you get undertaken on the motorway, ask yourself why it happened. if it was because you hadnt pulled back into the inside lane as soon as you'd overtaken the car(s) in front, then chances are its YOUR fault you got undertaken. /rant |

I've not found it a problem. As mentioned the rules of the road are different over there. I always read up before I go to remind myself. I actually prefer driving out there: the roads are better maintained, sign postings are clearer etc. Now, driving in Bradford, that's terrifying!

Still much better than driving around the M25 though I imagine - that's where the real lunatics seem to be (or is it only when I'm on it ? ...)
I think people's driving standards seem to be going down no matter where you are tbh |

I've experienced all of that behaviour on the M25, M5 and M6. Undertaking is against the law in this country but you still see people doing it.

Am I right in thinking it's an offence to 'hog' the middle lane now? I'm sure I remember seeing something about £1000 fine if you're caught doing it.

it's not been illegal since the 1972 Road Traffic Act. frowned upon, maybe, but definitely not illegal.
if you get pulled over by the po-po for it, depending on the circumstances you could potentially get done for dangerous driving, but you cannot be charged specifically for undertaking. |
