Melvin Pearce's Reviews
Restaurant Reviews: 5
We had a blow out September 15 near The Loop, so slowly drove it in to the parking area. There was no spare tyre or small wheel, so went into the nearest phone shop and phoned Thrify, they sent out a pick up truck and were taken back to the airport and just changed the car. We had a SUV and hadn't paid any extra, so were expecting a bill but did not receive one.

On the next trip we did pay the extra for the wheels.

I've been thinking about this today and especially the cars without spares. Now if you have a spare there is an expectation you will change the wheel.
But if there isn't one and no foam either then I see the whole issue as sitting with the rental company at their expense.

Mr Tom, can you tell me if Virgins fully inclusive insurance covers tyre damage?
I got stuck at the counter on my last trip for about 30 minutes with the Alamo salesman not willing to let me go without me paying for the extra tyre cover. I refused to take it as I believed I was already covered with the insurance I had.

Virgins insurance is actually the normal Alamo one just rebranded under Virgins name. So you get the same with Brits etc.
Punctures are a very moot point. I had two in the Summer and swapped the first car out no charge and never told them about the second one!
I had a blow out in an Avis car years ago and just dumped the trashed tyre/wheel in the boot.
The enhanced roadside assistance insurance you are referring to is where they come out and change the wheel for you and you don't pay for a trashed tyre.
Personally I won't pay it.
Technically they can charge you if you return the car with a punctured tyre but I've never heard of anybody being charged.

Edit. Just remembered I had a tyre plugged on a Dollar car maybe ten years ago. I told them at the airport when I returned it and they marked the car to be taken out of service as they won't accept a plugged tyre. Plus they reimbursed me the money I spent and gave me a tank of fuel for my trouble!

We put the spare wheel on and was advised to go swap the car. No charge as in our insurance plan it mentions tyres are included 😄 Thanks for all the advice though 👍🏼

Hi jc - as MrT said, unless specifically included, or taken via an insurer (Duncan can advise the US insurer he uses, don't buy from the car supplier as it's quite an expense), none of the car suppliers include excess reimbursement within their coverage. ER is damage against wheels, tyres, windscreen, underside, roof, key loss and wrong fuel, for which the hirer is responsible. It can be hit or miss if the car supplier charge. I bought ER for two years with Atlas but as I was going to Fla for 6 or more weeks it became a hassle as the limit was 31 days, so I had to return the motor and contract out another.

I've returned a motor with a cracking dent in the wing (not by me) and Alamo didn't bat an eyelid, signed it off with $0 to pay. Returned another motor with a puncture, no charge.

Thank you for that, I will make sure I pick a car with a spare next time, so at least I can take it back to the depot to swap for a new car.

Technically, the CDW waives any responsibilty (unless intentional etc.) in damages to the vehicle. If you follow that train of thought, the tires are part of the vehicle...

I've asked Alamo customer service as well, but I don't believe a word they say anymore.

But with CDW there are exclusions - tyres, windows and underside of the vehicle normally or if you take the car on unpaved roads.. Sot it is not a complete waive of responsibility.
